Wednesday’s Word – Volunteer!

Some impacts from the effects of Sandy hitting the Northeast US:

~ Some 5 million people in the tri-state (NY/NJ/CT) area alone are without power.

~ NYSE has been closed 2 days; the last time it happened was during the 1888 Blizzard.

~ NYC subway systems are flooded, the worst devastation in its 108 year history.

In the midst of this, people are helping each other.  There was a story on the local ABC news channel about residents who heard of a building in Manhattan without water, and upon hearing the broadcast, showed up with cases of water.  There are opportunities to be good neighbors, to volunteer if you can.  Here are some places to contact if you would like to help:

Volunteer in NJ – http://www.nj.gov/governor/news/news/552012/approved/20121029b.html

Volunteer in one of the NYC Boroughs – https://www.facebook.com/nycservice

I’m sure there are plenty of other places to check – the point is, if you are able and willing, it would be much appreciated!  I know I will be calling the NJ hotline since I will be here at least another day.  Maybe I’ll see you there!

Still in the midst of high winds and some flooding due to Hurricane/Tropical Storm Sandy.  It’s been a crazy night, with Atlantic City taking a direct hit from the storm, New Jersey beach towns being severely damaged, and a good portion of lower Manhattan without power.  Thousands of trees have been reported down, millions of people without power.  It will take some time to get things back to “normal”.  In the midst of this, there have still been people ignoring warnings to evacuate, and more who ignore warnings to stay off the roads.   This really impedes the ability of first responders who need to get to actual emergencies, and puts so many in harm’s way that could be avoided.  Please do the kind (and responsible) thing and heed the instructions of officials.  They have the cities’ best interests at heart as well as their citizens.  Also keep the first responders in your prayers and thoughts as they stay out in the danger to keep others safe…

Staying Safe

I came to NJ for a wedding this weekend, and ended up staying through Hurricane Sandy.  All city and state officials in the tri-state area have issued warnings for people to stay safe and to keep themselves and emergency personnel out of harm’s way.  If you are in the area of danger, please remember to listen to those instructions.  It could save your life and the life of those who are staying in the danger zones to protect and serve.  It is the kindest thing you can do for yourself, them, and those you love.  Stay safe through the storm!

Another Noreaster 013-300

Got out of Denver before the second round of cold and snow, only to walk into the possibility of a Nor’Easter by beginning of the week.

Thankful that I can adjust plans after Sunday if needed!  We’ll see if I can escape this “epic” storm…
