English: Houston, Texas, October 1, 2008 — Hurricane Ike orphaned thousands of pets. The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPCA) recruited volunteers to foster pets while they attempted to reunite them with owners. This dog, fostered for 10 days, is being adopted by a new family. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) works with government agencies and local volunteer groups to help care for pets, protected, and endangered species after a disaster. Quote For The Day

I really like this quote.  I want people to remember me, not for how long I live (which I hope is long!) but for what I contributed throughout my life.  I mentioned this to friends some months back, that if I died today I would be satisfied with the things I have done, people I have met, contributions I have made.  Life is about fullness, not length of it.  Of course, it’s great when we have both, but if given a choice between the two, I would choose the former and not the latter!

What about you?

This is a great way to start your weekend!  Thanks to CBS Evening News for airing this story about volunteers in Orlando that are helping kids smile.  If you find yourself needing something to do, spend a few hours a week volunteering.  I guarantee you will get as much out of it as the ones you help.   I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

Wednesday’s Word – Philanthropy

Did you know that one of the synonyms for Kindness is Philanthropy?

Most people, I’m sure, when they hear the word are immediately thinking of foundations headed by the wealthy, giving to art organizations and the like.  While that may be true, it’s not the whole picture.  Each of us has an opportunity to do something philanthropic, whether it be volunteering in the community or donating to a cause or charity.  It could be one time or on-going.  The point is, if we look for it, we all have an occasion, and in some ways an obligation, to do good for others.  Our world depends on it!  What do you think?  Is there a place in your community that could benefit by your philanthropic actions?

Definition From – altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by donations of money, property, or work to needy persons, by endowment of institutions of learning and hospitals, and by generosity to other socially useful purposes.
