Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

I should say, belated happy birthday – I noticed a friend posted the birthday on facebook.  Dr. Seuss was a great kids’ writer, and made adults take notice as well. What I like about him is that he made learning fun, even the “boring” stuff like being nice.  He had a way of making it easy to be kind, to think about how we treated others, how we thought of ourselves.  Here are some of my favorite quotes:

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

And the one thing that made me smile the most – watching little ones being picked up today from school, all with Cat In The Hat red-n-white striped hats made from paper and crayons…

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, 1957

“Young cat, if you keep your eyes open enough, oh, the stuff you would learn! The most wonderful stuff!”

Thank you, Dr. Seuss, for the way you opened our eyes.  It was always a most wonderful, unexpected surprise!
