“No One Is Youer Than You”
07/02/2012I was at a Super Bowl party (Congrats Giants!) and reconnected with a friend I hadn’t seen in many years. We talked about her coming back to the area after a long absence, and how she was reacclimating, where she was, you know, all the stuff you try to catch up on with a friend. At the end of the night we said our good-byes and promised to get together soon. And that’s when I was caught off-guard: she gave me a hug and said she always appreciated me because I was so “genuine” – and she needed more people like that in her life.
I got to thinking about that this morning, and how that might tie into Kindness. I think it does, as being yourself is a kindness you offer in friendship, or any relationship for that matter. Not trying to impress, not trying to “win over” on a job, love interest, or otherwise. It’s just you, and not all the different personalities you try to convey. This is not to say that we don’t try to smooth rough edges. We do that, and we do so on our own person – not one we dream up and choose to show. It’s the difference between remodeling your house to look better, or driving to a mansion in a rich neighborhood and saying “this is my house”.
Be kind to your friends and family, your co-workers and whoever else you consider in your “inner circle”. Be kind, be genuine, be yourself! Remember that no one is “youer than you”!
And another quote from Dr. Seuss – “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
Nice reminder to stay true to ourselves. With all the different types of people and personalities we interact with on a daily basis, it is sometimes easier to conform than stay true to our beliefs and values. Time for me to take inventory. Thanks for your daily posts. You give me something to ponder and/or work on everyday….chance to improve my inner being.
Thanks Veronica. I am finding the same, that I challenge myself every time I am writing a post! And a good source of reflection for me as well, to see if I am living up to what I believe and write about. Hopefully yes to both, and making a difference to those I come in contact with every day. Let it begin with me! ~Debbie
