Thursday Thanks – Family

31/05/2012

Family Gathers for Grandma 048Thankful today for family – whether we see them regularly or not, whether we are always best friends or sometimes fierce enemies. Family is what you can count on in crisis, when you know what is needed can be taken care of only by those who have known you “since when”.  Yes, I am thankful for that kind of family.

Wednesday’s Word – Letting Go

30/05/2012
Let go

Let go (Photo credit: Shenghung Lin)

Okay, so not one word today, but a quote about letting go, a part of life best learned early on:

There’s an important difference between giving up and letting go. ~ Jessica Hatchigan

When I look at this photo, it represents to me one of a person letting go to get to his destination.  If the diver doesn’t let go he doesn’t reach his goal.  If he hangs on to the platform he gives up, never achieving his life’s dream, possibly.

What do you think? Is there a difference between giving up and letting go?

Graduation Day - Sept 2011 - Rhys & MartinHere’s a great story about a man who made a promise and kept it.  Enjoy watching the video about the “Dreamers” from CBS Evening News.

What can you do to make a difference in the life of a child?  In the life of your community?  In your neighborhood?

Decoration Day, or what we know as Memorial Day, was originally a day to decorate the graves of soldiers from the Civil War.  National cemeteries were needed to bury the largest number of casualties in US history; cities and towns independently took it upon themselves to decorate the graves and remember their dead.  In 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, NY the official birthplace of Memorial Day since it was a community-wide event to go and decorate the graves with flowers and flags.  Read more about the history of Memorial Day on History.com.  I hope you’ll take pause to remember those who gave their lives in fighting for their country.

Travel Theme: Street Markets

27/05/2012

Porta Portese Street Market, Rome Italy ~ photo by Debbie Sarcone

Last Easter I was in Rome, and after church went to the market at Porta Portese.  I’d heard about this market and needed to see for myself what was offered there.  Whatever you need, you will almost be guaranteed to find it at Porta Portese.  It is a combination farmers market, flea market, and swap meet like you’ve never seen!  And it goes on for blocks past the gate it is named for.  Even with a few hours to spend, there seemed to be not enough time to really take in all that was there.  That gives me another reason to return to the Eternal City!

Thanks to Where’s My Backpack? for setting the challenge this week!
